This autobiographical , five part novel An Indication of the Cause , The Cellar , A breath , Cold , The child is a meticulous reconstruction of the years of adolescence This is uncompromising attack on the destructive forces school , family , church , society It is accusing assessment of blind in its conformism nation , its disgraceful deeds , its reluctant memory , the infinite human inertia This is undisguised manifestation of contempt and hatred It is planned and with surgical precision perfo [...]

Ein Selbstbildungsroman Bernhard reflects on his formative years A survivor s tale and an artistic manifesto.Bernhard s negativism is deeply life affirmingSince my early youth, I have been reading and rereading Thomas Bernhard Actually, reading Bernhard involves rereading Bernhard because of Bernhard s repetitive verbal music, repetitive not in a Philip Glass sense but in a Bach sense, a Beethoven sense

Gathering Evidence is a collection of five short books that Thomas Bernhard wrote chronicling the first twenty or so years of his life I don t know if there is a tradition in German speaking countries that memoirs need to be written in an egomaniacal manner, but this one falls into the same company of such greats as Klaus Kinski and Werner Herzog Just compare the opening scene of a young Thomas Bernhard jumping onto a bicycle and, viola, knowing instinctively how to ride it without ever having a [...]

Released a long exhalation and said Jesus when I finished this Not for the faint o heart It s sort of like that movie Precious except this is the Austrian, high literary, grammar school under Nazism Allied air raids tuberculosis sanatorium after all, the author s initials are T.B version of surviving a worst case scenario hell The language isn t as exagerratedly composed re repetitions and theme variations on every page as in his fiction, but the same special Bernhardian unrelenting bleakness ap [...]

At work I keep a piece of paper at my desk that reads in capital letters, THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION Every now and then someones stops by, notices it, and asks what it means I say It s from Thomas Bernhard s memoirs They ask But what does it mean I get somewhat irritated and say again, somewhat forcefully It s from Thomas Bernhard s memoirs They trudge away and, my guess, never read Thomas Bernhard s memoirs But they should Why Because they should What does THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION mean It means Stay [...]

Once again, a perfect 4.5 star book although it seems a little ridiculous to quibble about Bernhard s prose, since the man is obviously a master and can do what he likes, I feel very strongly that there were peaks and valleys here The black aria there s no other phrase I can think of that fits which opens the section about Salzburg is as good as anything I ve ever read, and might be the most Bernhard of Bernhard riffs, which is really saying something All of the pseudo musical everyone s always [...]

This is my fifth and just possibly my last book by Bernhard He is stupendous, but the problem he raises for me is When is it time to stop reading him I haven t got a clear idea about that, but I think it might hinge on whether or not you laugh when you read him When he piles impossible disaster on implausible condemnation, when each sentence pronounces a verdict tar black, hopeless, sweeping, disconsolately angry than the last, do you laugh I do I do not think he intends me to I laugh becaus [...]

Powerful, difficult stuff Not the place to start w Bernhard, but a simply fascinating account of how he came to be who he was when his literary career finally began. What a genius.

A magnificent book by a really original, great writer So many writers get undeservedly high reputations for originality or genius, but Bernhard is the real thing His books are eccentric in construction long sentences, no paragraphs, the same words repeated, but he can ignore the rules because he is a great writer. He is also unflinchingly honest He looks with x ray vision at the world around him and he reports the truth and does so fearlessly.I love the title of this autobiography because I think [...]

A compelling, shameful childhood as a illegitimate child a quite unsuccessful school life an abandonment and a fresh start with a cellarshop in the slums of Salzburg Not enough A dreadful disease lots of deaths loneliness, a shunned life at all.Bernhard is a difficult person on every places, and this is highly understandable, when one thinks all the events in his life Depressing, agonizing, challenging, but completely true Truth.

sanatoriums and grammar school sound like crappy places also probably has the funniest description of ppl with tuberculosis walking around and spitting phglemgh into phlegm jars waiting to die i ve ever read good jod mr b.

I have never read Bernhard s novels, so this was a hard one to start with especially because he has NO paragraph breaks Are his novels the same I appreciated his bleak humor and his portrayal of his grandfather in the first book, and his revulsion of small town German and Austrian culture is very funny You should know that Bernhard s style is very unique He repeats himself, often several times on the same page he holds grudges, he rants But the style is for me a plus and feels like a direct line [...]

Dense and detailed account of childhood No paragraphs or chapters must have seemed a good idea at the time.
